The certification process is designed as a national minimal standard. We hope that states and private agencies employing gambling treatment counselors will use these requirements as a starting point of minimal acceptable competency and qualification.

The American Compulsive Gambling Counselor Certification Board, Inc. is a nonpartisan, non-political, and non-profit organization. It is organized to achieve certain objectives. Among them being to provide identity, recognition, and a basis for integrity for the profession of Compulsive Gambling Counseling by the establishment of standards for the performance and competencies desired of the practitioners in this field.

The American Academy developed the Certified Gambling Addiction Specialist (CGAS) certification to meet the growing need for credentialed counselors and other mental health care professionals working within the discipline of gambling addiction. The Certified Gambling Addiction Specialist (CGAS) credential is a clinical certification based upon experience providing addiction treatment under the direction of a qualified clinical supervisor, specialized clinical training in gambling addiction, and passing a written online examination.
